Velayudham is a forthcoming Tamil superhero film directed by M. Raja with Vijay and Genelia D'Souza whilst Hansika Motwani and Saranya Mohan portray other pivotal roles. The film was formally launched on July 15, 2010 with its photo shoots taken earlier during the month.Produced by V. Ravichandran's Aascar Films, the film is currently in its filming stage and expected to release on actor Vijay's 37th birthday (June 22, 2011). Remakes have always been safe bets for Vijay and director M Raja. With the former having a track record of films like ‘Kadhalukku Mariyadhai’, ‘Ninaithen Vandhai’, ‘Priyamanavale’ and ‘Pokkiri’, the latter has carved a niche for himself doing remakes from ‘Jayam’ to ‘Santosh Subramaniam’.

Vijay's latest film ‘Velayudham’ directed by ‘Jayam’ Raja started rolling yesterday. The film is currently progressing in and around locations in Hyderabad. A special set was erected at the world famous Golconda fort and the shoot started in that. ‘Jayam’ Raja is filming the climax fight. Earlier Vijay's 2004 film 'Thirumali' was also shot in this historical fort location. The attractive images of Vijay all dressed like a super man Robinhood with guns and swords in the launch invite materials are going to be from this climax fighting sequence. The action scenes were choreographed by Selvam master who was also the stunt director of ‘Anniyan’. On Sunday, Hansika Motwani flew down to Chennai from Mumbai to do a photo shoot with the star at a studio in Saligramam, for producer Aascar Ravichandran’s Jayam Raja directed Velayutham. The film is rumoured to be a remake of Nagarjuna ’s Telugu hit Azad (released way back in 2000), which was inspired from Amitabh Bachchan’s 1989 flop Main Azad Hoon, which was in turn a carbon copy of Frank Capra’s 1941 classic Meet John Doe! Vijay will have two heroines — Genelia and Hansika — in the film and will play a fictitious ‘man of the masses’ created by a female journalist. For the first time ever, Harris Jayaraj will provide music for this movie. The producer of Velayutham, Aascar Ravichandran, is veteran producer and distributor who controls more than 30 screens in NSC area, and has a proven track record with hits like Anniyan and Dasavatharam.
